  • Q:  What is Vermeil?
  • A: A product that is made from a base of sterling silver that is coated or plated on its surfaces with gold of at least 10K finess and at least 2.5 microns thick (100/1,000,000 inch).
  • The term vermeil cannot be used if the sterling is covered with a base metal before being coated with gold unless the presence of the base metal is disclosed.
  • Pronunciation: ver-MAY

  • Q:  What is gold-filled?
  • A: Gold-Filled Jewelry, also known as "rolled gold" or "rolled gold plate" is composed of a solid layer of gold bonded with heat and pressure to a base metal such as brass.  Some high quality gold-filled pieces have the same appearance as 14 karat (58% gold).
  • Gold-filled items, even with daily wear, can last five to 30 years but will eventually wear through. Gold-filled items are 50 to 100,000 times thicker than regular gold plating.  This is the next best alternative to buying solid gold.

  • Q:  How can I avoid the green ring that brass leaves on my finger?
  • A: Unfortunately brass does leave a green ring on the finger, but the best trick I've seen is to put a little clear nailpolish on the inside of the band where it touches your finger.  This should do the trick until that wears off.  When it does, just repolish and voila!  Brass is just such a nice color metal and so much cheaper than Silver and Gold, so don't be afraid to rock it out!

  • Q:  How do I care for my jewelry?
  • A: Polishing cloths are an excellent choice for cleaning your sterling silver jewelry. You might read recommendations to use toothpaste to clean sterling silver, but avoid doing that -- toothpaste is abrasive and can leave scratches. On some pieces, you may find you like the oxidized patina developed after continual wear.  But, a great tip to avoid oxidation on sterling silver is to wrap your jewelry in jeweler's tissue paper and store in a ziplock bag.  I'm happy to offer more tips if you have any questions.
