Melissa at her studio in Savannah, Georgia
Melissa, Sam, and Louie
I’m Melissa Cohen, founder of Metal Sugar—a name born from a dream more than 18 years ago, after my first metalsmithing class ignited a lasting love for jewelry making. At the time, I was working a corporate job in Atlanta and felt lost and unfulfilled. Discovering jewelry was transformative — I knew instantly this was what I was meant to do.
Not long after, I moved to New York and immersed myself in the jewelry world and the diamond district for the next decade. Always hungry to learn, I took every class and workshop I could find. Over time, I began to establish myself as a bespoke fine jeweler, building a following almost entirely through word of mouth.
After becoming a mom, the pace of city life started to feel exhausting. My husband Sam (who’s also my jewelry partner), our daughter Louie, and I decided to trade the hustle and bustle for the laid-back beauty of Tybee Island, Georgia — and we’ve been here for over eight years now.
As a metalsmith for almost two decades, I’ve developed a collection that ranges from clever, sweet, and sometimes funny pieces to delicate, gemstone-driven fine jewelry. I love experimenting with new techniques, continue to take classes, and am committed to working with recycled metals and responsibly sourced gemstones from around the world.
In March 2020, I opened my Jewelry Showroom & Studio in Savannah’s Starland District, where I create and sell my work. I often meet with clients there by appointment to design one-of-a-kind pieces — from engagement and wedding rings to heirloom recreations. You can also find my latest work on Instagram.
I believe creating a custom piece should feel exciting, not intimidating. My goal is to make the process informative, collaborative, and fun — and while you’ll leave with a beautiful, well-made piece of jewelry, you might also leave with a new jeweler friend for life!
